The Malawi Prison Services (MPS) says it is reviewing and amending the existing prisoner’s laws in an effort to align them with Nelson Mandela rules.
Speaking during the opening of a three-day workshop in Zomba, Commissioner responsible for Farms and Industry at MPS, Clement Kainja said the current Prisons Act is outdated and does not focus on the needs of the offender.
Kainja said the Mandela rules are important as they promote human rights of the inmates as well as respecting their dignity.
