Ministry of Health and Population has expressed worry as reproductive health rights of women in Malawi is under threat.
Ministry of Health and Population through a published statement said there is a shortage in supply of contraceptives due to a disruption in transportation systems in Mozambique as a result of cyclone idai.
Principle Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Dan Namarika confirmed of the development.
“This has happened due to a devastating cyclone which hit parts of Sourthen Africa and thereby disrupting normal transport systems in Mozambique,” Namarika said.
He further said that the Ministry is trying to ensure delivery of the contraceptives.
He also appealed to the Ministry’s partners who might have the said commodities to help.
Meanwhile health activist have expressed worry due to the current shortage of contraceptives as it places women at risk of getting unwanted pregnancy.
A lot of women in the country depend on public health services as most of them cannot afford to purchase contraceptives from private pharmacies.
Among other contraceptives that are stuck at Beira port in Mozambique are injectable (DEP-IM), Implanon and Jadelle.
