President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has said opposition Peoples Party (PP) President Dr. Joyce Banda approached him for a possible alliance and he rejected.
Mutharika said this on Sunday during the official launch of the party’s manifesto at Kamuzu Institute for Sports in the capital Lilongwe.
In his speech, Mutharika said it is not true that he approach Banda for a possible electoral alliance ahead of the forthcoming tripartite election.
“It was Joyce Banda who approached me to work together but I refuted following her unkindness for Malawians, in her two year rule she squandered a lot of government money. I can also tip you that Joyce Banda tried to send Ibrahim Matola to plead with me but I chased him right at the gate,” said Mutharika.
Commenting on the electoral alliance of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and PP, Mutharika described the alliance as mess.
He said the PP/MCP alliance work to the advantage of the ruling DPP in the forthcoming May 21 polls.
Meanwhile PP says the party is not shaken with the plans by government to arrest Banda over cashgate, saying the arrest is political.
