Northern Region Police have promised to protect women in this years’ tripartite elections.

They have added that they will not tolerate any form of intimidation or violence against women who are taking part in this years’ elections.

This was said by Senior Deputy Commissioner of Police in the north, Peter Chasweka during training of station officers and operation officers on ending and responding to violence against women in elections.

Chasweka said that Police in the country will not condone any form of violence against women.

Chasweka said police will ensure that women are protected so that they also conduct their rallies like any other candidate.

“We are ready to protect our women,” Chasweka said.

He further called on police officers to properly handle complaints from women so that they have confidence in the police.

Chasweka added that in the region they have not recorded any political violence against women.

“At national level we have recorded 13 cases and that is why the police came up with these trainings to empower its officers to protect women in elections,” he said.

“We want to end such malpractices so that women also participate in elections and decision- making processes.”
