Ministry of Health has hailed Mangochi District Health Office (DHO) for fighting maternal deaths in the district.

Mangochi DHO has reduced marten deaths by almost half from 12 in the last quarter of the 2018 to five from the first quarter of 2019.

Commenting on the development Ministry of Health spokesperson Joshua Malango said it is fulfilling to note that several districts in the country are implementing interventions employed by the ministry towards reduction of maternal deaths.

He further recommended the development saying a lot of districts are doing the same.

“This is a welcomed development we are proud. This is not happening in Mangochi only, but several districts. This is why we are doing well at a national level,” Malango said.

The 2015/16 Malawi Demographic and Health Survey Report puts Malawi’s maternal mortality rate at 439 per 100 000 live births.  The rates have been fluctuating from 510 in 2008; 460 in 2010 and 634 in 2015.
