Two days after three people died in road accident in Ntcheu district, another road accident in Nkhotakota has claimed lives of five on labour day at Kasitu in the district.

Nkhunga police station public relations officer, Sub-Inspector Esau identified the vehicle as Toyota Sienta Saloon registration number NB 8477 and was being driven by Precious Tionge Kaunda 31, with some passengers on board heading to Dwambadzi from Dwangwa direction.

“On arrival at Mukoma junction along Nkhotakota-Dwangwa M5 road, unregistered motor vehicle that had passengers and was being driven by Mike Phiri, 25 was intending to overtake the first vehicle.

“In process of doing that, the two vehicles collided with each other and both went to the extreme side of the road,” said Esau.

The first vehicle overturned once whereas the unregistered vehicle threw out passengers through the windows and windscreen and later landed on them.

Following the impact, one female and four male passengers died on spot due to severe head injuries whereas three and five other passengers escaped with serious and minor injuries respectively and were rushed to Nkhotakota district hospital for treatment.

Police has since appealed to road users especially drivers to avoid unnecessary overtaking which leads to loss of productive citizens.
