Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is investigating Malawi Congress Party (MCP) secretary general Eisenhower Mkaka for a ‘suspicious’ meeting with poll presiding officers.
Mkaka called the meetings with MEC presiding officers as confidential the development which did not please his contender Reverend Fletcher Mtandika.
Mtandika told reporters that it was not on for Mkaka to be holding confidential meetings with MEC officer in this critical time.
“It was not on for Mkaka to be holding confidential meetings with MEC staff during a critical time when it is just days before elections,” he said.
In his response, Mkaka said his motive of meeting them was based on their capacity as head teachers of different schools as he is working on improving education standards once voted into power.
“I was meeting them in their capacity as head teachers of different schools. I have been preaching in my rallies that I want education standards to improve in the constituency, and the said meetings was meant to discuss on how best we can achieve that,” Mkaka said.
In their response, MEC through chief elections officer Sam Alfandika said they are investigating the matter.
“We are investigating to find out what really was discussed in the said meetings,” said Alfandika.
Mkaka is said to have met 20 presiding officers last week in the constituency he is vying for a parliamentary seat.
