A man identified as Saizi Alamu, 30, of Kalembo Village in the area Traditional Authority Kalembo in Balaka has died after being hit by a speeding minibus.

In an interview, Balaka Police Station Deputy Public Relations Officer, Precious Makuta said the deceased was hit by a Toyota Hiace minibus registration number MH 495 driven by Joseph Pauma, 40, of Khuzumba Village in Chief Kawinga’s area in Machinga.

Makuta said the accident occurred on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at Ulongwe Trading Centre at around 9:00 pm when Joseph Pauma was driving from the direction of Mangochi heading towards Liwonde with several passengers on board.

“Upon arriving at Ulongwe, Pauma failed to control the vehicle due to speeding and hit Alamu who was crossing the road from the left to the right hand side,” said Makuta.

“Alamu died on the spot after sustaining severe head injuries while two other passengers in the minibus sustained minor injuries,” he added.

Makuta said the driver will appear in court soon to answer the charge of causing death due to reckless driving contrary to Section 126 of the Road Traffic.

Meanwhile, police in Balaka are appealing to all motorists to be cautious on the road to avoid similar accidents.
