There have been chaos on Saturday in Dowa where angry Malawi Congress Party (MCP) supporters stormed Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) office in Mponela, burned tires and blocked the M1 road while chanting songs against DPP.

According to reports that this publication has gathered, the anger arose after the mob heard rumors on social media that Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has become victorious in just ended May 21 polls – a thing that did not please the mob as they said Dr Lazarus Chakwera deserved the position as reflected in Election results.

The group argued that they were aware that Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has rigged the votes in favor of DPP.

Mponela police station officer in charge Deputy Commissioner Chingasa confirmed of the incident but dismissed reports that the mob also razed down buildings at the trading centre.

“We indeed experienced chaos here in Mponela as angry mob stoned the DPP office for political reasons. We are still on the ground investigating the real cause of the fracas. I should make it clear that no building has been set on fire,” she said.

Chingasa said after receiving the news, police rushed to the scene and managed to calm the situation down.

Meanwhile, MEC is yet to release the official presidential results.
