United Democratic Front (UDF) President Atupele Austine Muluzi has congratulated President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika for winning the May 21 tripartite election which was marred by serious irregularities.
Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Dr. Jane Madondo Ansah declared Mutharika a winner on Monday after he amassed 38.57% against his strong contender Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera who amassed 35.41%.
Ansah declared Mutharika winner after the electoral body successfully vacated the injunction obtained by MCP demanding vote recount.
Writing on his official facebook page, Muluzi hailed Mutharika for emerging victorious in the controversial polls.
“As leader of the UDF, may I wish his excellency The President, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika my congratulations on his successful re-election and all the best for a successful second term in office. I hope that he and his government will be able to continue to grow the economy and quickly establish more jobs across the economy as well as reunify our beautiful country following such a challenging election period,” wrote Atupele.
Meanwhile President Mutharika will be sworn-in today in Blantyre.
