The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has dispelled rumors that the body is planning to hike fuel price effective June 1, saying the rumours are unfounded.

On Tuesday, the social media was awash with reports that MERA will hike the fuel with effect from June 1, 2019.

Reacting to the rumour MERA Chief Executive Officer Collins Magalasi described the rumour as untrue, saying MERA is yet to conduct the review.

“Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) would like to advise the general public that energy price reviews are conducted on the first Tuesdays of every month and the June 2019 review has not yet been conducted. The outcome of the June 2019 review shall be communicated to the general public once concluded and approved by the MERA Board,” reads part of the statement.

Magalasi has since urged Malawians to ignore the rumours of fuel and Electricity tariff hike.
