Paramount Chief Kawinga has named the newly rehabilitated Lilonde-Mangochi road as ‘Peter Mutharika Highway’ to honour the newly elected President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika for imitating the project.
Chief Kawinga made the declaration on Sunday during a Victory Rally organized by the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) at St. Augustine 3 Primary School in the Eastern Region.
Paramount Chief Kawinga said chiefs in the Eastern region have named the Mangochi Road ‘Peter Mutharika Highway’ and asked the President to accept the name.
“Whether you will accept or not, we have decided to call the road the Peter Mutharika Highway,” Kawinga said while attracting ululation from the people gathered at the rally.
Kawinga said Mutharika has rare character when it comes to development hence the honour.
President Mutharika accepted to be named after the Liwonde-Mangochi road.
“I have heard what the chiefs have proposed. Who am I to reject what the traditional leaders have said?” Mutharika said.
Meanwhile President Mutharika has promised to develop Mangochi to the level of Wakapunku in Singapore.
