The much publicized non-violent countrywide demonstrations over the controversial result of last month’s presidential elections were overtaken by violent acts on Thursday.

The demonstrations were organized by Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) under the banner of Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC).

It is reportedly that the organizer of the mass demonstration failed to control the crowd as some unruly youth turned violent.

According to reports, a lot of public and private properties have been destroyed during the nationwide demonstrations.

It is also said that two police officers have been injured in the line of duty as the unruly protesters attacked them.

The demonstrations were participated by thousands of people in all the cities of Lilongwe, Blantyre, Zomba and Mzuzu.

Other notable faces that joined the mass demonstrations were of United Transformation Movement (UTM) leader Dr. Saulos Chilima and Malawi congress party (MCP) leader Lazarus Chakwera.

The protesters, were demonstrating to call for a resignation of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Jane Ansah for “running a fraudulent presidential election.”
