Some government sectors have hailed church based organizations in Ntchisi district for putting much effort to end child marriages.

This follows projects by organizations such as the Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM) which has withdrawn more than 10 girls from child marriages in a short period in traditional authority Kalumo in the district under its project called zatonse.

Ntchisi District Labour Officer, Mr. Brian Maenje, says government has been supported towards reducing the malpractice thanks to the church based organizations such as the EAM.

Said Maenje: “Our work has been easy because the organizations are helping us a lot which has seen cases of child marriages being reduced.”

A recent study by Action Aid’s spotlight initiative indicates that in Ntchisi district especially in the area of Traditional Authority Nthondo, at least 10 girls drop out of school every month among others because of early marriages.

During the youth open day ceremony on Saturday in T/A Kalumo, EAM Project Officer Mr. Samuel Kowela said the organization is working hard to see the complete end of child labour and marriages in the district.

“As a church organization, we will work tirelessly until all the children who married at tender ages are sent back to school,” said Kowela.

One of the girls who was withdrawn from child marriage in the district expressed gratitude on what the organization has done by sending her back to school.
