The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has come out with guns blazing defending an account it holds at FDH Bank named Chief Elections Officer Account, after a story in Monday’s Daily Times revealed that K4 billion was transferred into the account on the eve of May 21 Tripartite Elections.According to a statement released by the commission’s director of media, Sangwani Mwafulirwa, reacting to a story, the account was opened in 2014 on the Treasury’s advice to ease transaction of funds above K500 000 following the 2013 ban on transfers of funds over the said amount. The circular has also disclosed that in March this year the Treasury transfered K8.1 billion to the account for elections operations.
