Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has appointed Lilongwe Central legislator Lobin Lowe as the interim leader of opposition in Parliament.
The appointment of Lowe as the Leader of opposition in the August is an indication of the Parliamentary Standing Orders which say that the opposition party with highest number of parliamentarians has the power to contribute for the position of a leader of opposition.
Lowe’s appointment as the interim leader of opposition was announced by the First Deputy speaker Madalitso Kazombo.
“I would like to announce that the leadership of MCP has provided leaders of the house as follows; interim leader of opposition Lobin Lowe, interim party chief whip Sam Kawale (Dowa North East) and deputy chief whip is Khumbize Chaponda (Kasungu North East).
The party, was supposed to appoint their leader during the first meeting of the opening of the 48th Session of Parliament, but they refused arguing that they do not recognize presidency of Mutharika.
Meanwhile the Party’s president is challenging the presidential results in court with his counterpart Saulos Chilima of United Transformation Movement UTM).
