Police in Kasungu have arrested a 33-year-old man for allegedly murdering his wife’s grandmother at Chambwe village in the district on Saturday night.
According to Kasungu Police Station Spokesperson, Harry Namwaza the suspect is identified as Kalumphadeka Banda and the deceased Mulitani Banda.
He said the suspect got married to Nelia Banda, 30, a granddaughter to the deceased and due to family problem, they separated and the wife went to live with the deceased.
“On the day at around 6 pm, the suspect visited the house, where he started uttering abusive words allegedly for being obstructed to take one of his children to stay with him,
“Being annoyed with the suspect’s behavior some relatives of the deceased apprehended him and tied him up before releasing him,” Namwaza explained.
The Spokesperson said at around 10 pm, Kalumphadeka Banda reappeared at the wife’s late grandmother’s house and allegedly started assaulting her to the extent that she died on the spot.
Postmortem conducted at Kasungu District Hospital revealed that death occurred due to damaged spleen after being assaulted.
The suspect has been charged with murder and will appear in court soon to answer the charge leveled against him.
Kalumphadeka comes from Dzoole village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Dzoole in Dowa District.
