Barely after few weeks when President Peter Mutharika used a by-pass road on his way back to Lilongwe from independence celebrations in Blantyre, eyebrows of Malawians were raised yesterday as the first citizen was under heavy security escort.

To the surprise of many, more than five military tanks were among the presidential convoy with a number of soldiers beating the number of police officers who are mostly accompany the presidential motorcade.

Mutharika was is in the south attending the so called Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) victory match.

Presidential spokesperson Mgeme Kalirani said he could not comment on the matter because it was the Malawi Defense Force that provided security.

After May 21 elections where Malawi Elections Commission (MEC) declared Mutharika the winner of the presidential election, the country has been unrest demanding the resignation of Jane Ansah for tampering with the presidential votes.

Meanwhile Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leader Lazarus Chakwera and United Transformation Movement (UTM) Saulos Chilima are challenging the presidential outcome in court.
