The Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) has applauded Nsanje’s Traditional Authority (TA) Ndamela for his role in making sure that his subjects who are in flood prone areas move to uplands by donating his own land.
MRCS President, Levison Changole made the sentiments Wednesday in the area of TA Ndamela in Nsanje when he visited an area where his institution is constructing houses for the people who showed willingness to move to uplands.
Changole noted that it is not easy nowadays for traditional leaders to surrender land for free to their subjects for the sake of saving their lives.
He said traditional authority Ndamela had shown the love of his subjects by providing land for their resettlement on which Malawi Red Cross Society has constructed houses for 50 families who were affected by the floods.
“We must appreciate the gesture shown by traditional authority Ndamela by providing his land for people to resettle. This is not an easy thing nowadays. I am hearing that he has even provided another land to his subjects apart from the one we have constructed houses on for 50 households,” Changole said.
He further called on other traditional leaders to emulate what T/A Ndamela has done by ensuring that his subjects are not perpetual victims of flooding.
He added that he is excited that the K2.3 Billion project of flood response which they planned to construct transitional shelters in four districts has been fruitful.
The MRSC president assured the traditional leader and those who have moved to the upland of his organization’s total support while asking those who have not yet moved to do so.
Traditional Authority Ndamela while saying he put the lives of his subjects at heart, applauded the Malawi Red Cross Society for the support rendered to his people who were affected by the floods.
“I must appreciate the support from different stakeholders which includes government and organizations like the Malawi Red Cross Society. I promise to find a lasting solution to the challenges which we have been facing due to flooding,” said Ndamela.
He further promised to encourage his subjects to move to the uplands but also giving them land for their resettlement.
