A court marshal in Nkhotakota has been arrested for allegedly stealing a pair of ivory from the court’s store room.
Nkhunga police public relations officer, Ignatius Esau said the suspect is identified by the name Steven Nyirenda, a court marshal at Nkhunga Magistrate Court in the district.

According to Esau, In June this year, Nkhunga magistrate court handled a case of Illegal possession of listed species that included two pairs of ivory and one hippo tooth.

“Upon completion of the case, Parks and Wildlife officials called officials at Nkhunga magistrate court informing them that they were coming to collect the afore listed exhibits.

“As the court clerk was preparing the said exhibits for collection, he was amazed to note that one pair of ivory was missing from the store room, ” said Esau.

Thereafter, police carried out investigations which led to the arrest of 36 suspect who comes from Jumbo village Traditional Authority Nyaluwanga in Nkhatabay district.

Currently, police has intensified its investigations in order to recover the stolen pair of ivory.
