Police in Dedza have arrested a Mozambican and a Malawian for allegedly being found with offensive weapons which they wanted to smuggle into the country from Mozambique.
Dedza Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Cassim Manda has confirmed the arrest of the suspects and recovery of the weapons which include rocket propelled grenade, live ammunitions and an AK 47 magazine.
Police suspect the two wanted to use the weapons for robberies in the country.
Manda said the two, George Kachaje, a Malawian and Marko Selestino from Mozambique were arrested at Mphathi border by mobile police personnel who were manning a roadblock.
“The two got themselves some weapons which we suspect they were planning to use in robbery acts and police have since recovered the weapons. We have also seized from them some precious stones weighing 5 kilograms,” he said.
Manda said Selestino is a habitual criminal who was arrested in 2011 after being found with guns and Dedza police formally handed him over to Mozambique where he was released last year after serving a seven year jail sentence.
Kachaje, 36 hails from Khulungira village in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Kachere in Dedza while Selestino aged 25 hails from Mkaliwaja village in the area of T/A Fewe in Angonia district in Mozambique.
