Police in Nkhata-Bay have arrested Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) youth cadet suspected of petrol-bombing the house and a vehicle of Human Right Defenders Coalition (HRDC) Chairperson Timothy Mtambo.

Nkhata-Bay Police official confirmed of the arrest and identified the suspect as Paul Kawaza Kawawo of Kajula Village, Traditional Authority Malanda, Nkhata-Bay.

“Brief facts are that the suspect visited Nkhatabay Police Station took a chat with the Officer in-Charge Mr.

Nkhata-Bay Police official confirmed of the arrest and identified the suspect as Paul Kawaza Kawawo of Kajula Village, Traditional Authority Malanda, Nkhata-Bay.

“Brief facts are that the suspect visited Nkhatabay Police Station took a chat with the Officer in-Charge Mr. Mike Chona and identified himself to a Police Officer of the rank of Superintendent then off he had gone.

“At about 1730hrs information reached the Police that a motor vehicle registration NA971 Toyota Ractis black in colour number has been involved into a road accident and the driver has taken one of the victim by force heading Nkhatabay Boma. Acting on the information Police Officers followed up and intercepted the vehicle at Nkhatabay T/Off,” reads in part the police report.

Added the report: “Upon searching the vehicle it was discovered that there was a firearm Postal Star without ammunitions. This firearm was also used in threatening to shoot one of the victims.”

During question, the suspect confessed to have also petrol-bombed Mtambo’s house in the capital Lilongwe.

“The suspect has been arrested for further questioning and the firearm seized. NB/CR/16/08/2019 refers. Sir this person has confessed that he is one of the five people who petrol bombed Mtambos premises a few days ago and also attacked a gule wamkulu dancer in Lilongwe.

“ Apart from this he has also said he is one of the cadets who went to Mtakataka for security training and they were given PMS uniform during that training,” added the report.

The suspect will appear in court soon.
