Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has revealed plans to completely phase out the gambling craze in the country by outlawing the practice.
Uhuru’s desire to completely remove betting in the country is contrary to what the government wants as it is implementing efforts to tame the practice in the country.
Uhuru challenged lawmakers to come up with laws which would eliminate gambling in Kenya.
“We have this thing called gambling in the country and it is terrible. I alone as Uhuru cannot change this trend. Go back to the constitution and change the laws,” he urged.
The president went on to urge the operating betting companies to adhere to laws despite the possibility of a law which would hurl them out of business.
One of Uhuru’s major points of concern was the fact that gambling only seemed to enrich a few individuals at the expense of millions of participants.
The government earlier in the year made its intentions clear on cracking the whip on betting firms in the country.
Uhuru Kenyatta says he’s ready to sign law banning gambling in Kenya.
Companies had their licences revoked at the start of July 2019, with giant betting firm Sportpesa being the biggest casualty.
With several companies reportedly complying with the government, Sportpesa is still crying foul over alleged frustration from the government with its paybill number still suspended.
