Karonga Magistrate Court has given bail to four people who were arrested on Wednesday in the district over the failed anti Jane Ansah demonstrations organized by Human Right Defenders Coalition (HRDC), faceofmalawi can reveal.

The four were arrested by the police at Karonga roundabout as they were mobilizing people to take part in the demonstrations despite Malawi Supreme Court order to have the protests suspended in the next 14 days.

The four have been charged with contempt of court and spreading false news.

Human Right Defenders Coalition (HRDC) led by Timothy Mtambo have been holding demonstrations national wide to force Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Dr. Jane Ansah to resign for failing to manage the May 21 tripartite election.

The CSOs are accusing Ansah of conniving with the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in rigging the May 21 polls.

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and United Transformation Movement (UTM) President Dr. Saulos Chilima have since dragged MEC to court seeking nullification of the May 21 polls.

Meanwhile the case is scheduled to resume on Monday next week at the Constitutional Court in the capital Lilongwe.
