A 74-year-old woman on Thursday set a world record by delivering twins at a hospital in Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur town.
Mangayamma, who conceived through the In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) process, delivered twin girls at the Ahalya Nursing Home in Guntur.
A team comprising four doctors performed the caesarean operation. Dr Sanakkayala Umashankar, who headed the team of doctors, said both the mother and the babies were doing well.
Hailing from Nelapartipadu in East Godavari district, Mangayamma was childless even after 57 years of marriage. She married Yerramatti Raja Rao in 1962.
Recently, a woman who lives near their house got pregnant at the age of 55 via IVF.
The couple drew inspiration from her and approached IVF experts at the nursing home late last year, who decided to help them.
The doctors collected the husband’s sperm and tested it for the IVF process. The doctors’ efforts were fruitful and Mangayamma conceived twins.
Since then, the doctors regularly kept a watch on Mangayamma’s condition. The nursing home even arranged a felicitation of the couple before the delivery.
“It is another world record. Mangayamma and her husband are also happy,” Dr Umashankar said.
