Police in Rumphi have arrested a man identified only as Mada for allegedly stealing a motorcycle on Saturday, September 7th at Thulwe Estate in the area of Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe.

According to the district’s police spokesperson Inspector Henry Mnjere, the suspect hired a motorcycle of Oswell Mkandawire as he wanted to be ferried to Luhono from Rumphi.

“Upon reaching the said area, the suspect assaulted the motorcycle operator and then went away with the said motorcycle. The matter was reported to his relatives who launched a search,” said the publicist.

Later, they got information that the suspect is keeping the said motorcycle in Mzuzu hence they arranged for transport and went there the following day and found him.

The motorcycle was recovered and the thief was being taken to Rumphi where before arriving, the information reached angry mob who then blocked the road at Chipokawoli bridge.

“Upon seeing the suspect in the motor vehicle, they stopped it and started assaulting him severely. A well wisher tipped off the police who rushed to the scene and arrested the suspect,” Mnjere said.

Then he was taken to Rumphi hospital where they referred him to Mzuzu central for further treatment.

He has been charged with robbery, contrary to Section 301 of the Penal code and he will soon appear in court to answer the charge.
