Information reaching faceomflawi indicates that one of the Anti-Jane Ansah protesters from Karonga has died in police cell after being beaten by Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldiers.

Two weeks ago Human Right Defenders Coalition (HRDC) organized demonstrations aimed at forcing Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Dr. Jane Ansah to resign for failing to manage the May 21 tripartite elections.

But in Karonga the demonstrations were marred by violence as protesters were involved in running battles with the MDF soldiers following the decision by the protesters to block the Songwe border.

MDF soldiers assaulted the protesters several and many of them sustained serious injuries and one of them was Justin Phiri who was also arrested by the police.

Phiri appeared at Mzuzu Magistrate Court on Monday to answer the charges.

It is reported that the protester died on Wednesday while at Mzuzu Prison.

Phiri’s family members have now gathered at Mzuzu Police Station demanding answers on how their relative died in their custody.
