United Transformation Movement (UTM) has condemned the assault of one of the members of the Human Right Defenders Coalition (HRDC) Billy Mayaya by Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) youth cadets in Blantyre.

HRDC organized demonstrations in Blantyre on Wednesday with an aim of forcing Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Dr. Jane Ansah to resign for failing to manage the May 21 tripartite election.

The demonstrations started on very well from Kumuzu Upper Stadium but upon reaching Chichiri Trade Fair Grounds protesters bumped into DPP supporters who blocked the Chipembere High Way.

The two sides started pelting stones at each other but DPP cadets overpowered the protesters and pounced on Billy Mayaya.

The DPP cadets hacked Mayaya in the head in full view of the law enforcers and he was later ruched to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.

In a statement released on Wednesday evening, UTM spokesperson Joseph Chidanti Malunga condemned the assault describing it as barbaric.
