The government of Malawi through Ministry of Health has fired warning shots at health workers in public hospital who are demanding cash from patients to access free services.
The warning came barely months after reports emerged that health workers are demanding cash from pregnant women at Kamuzu Central Hospital in the capital Lilongwe.
In a statement released recently signed by Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Health Dan Namarika made available to faceofmalawi, the Ministry said all services in public health facilities are free except for special paying wings which exist in some of the public hospitals.
He said disciplinary action will be taken on health workers found to charging patients on otherwise free services in public hospitals.
