Police in Lilongwe have arrested a driver of a tipper which pulled down electricity polls in area 43 next to human rights defenders coalition vice chairpersons house, Gift Trapence.
Spokesperson for Electricity Supply Commission of Malawi (ESCOM) Innocent Chitosi has confirmed the development identifying the driver as Moffat Maluwa.
“The driver has been arrested I think the police can shed more light but that is true that he has been arrested and what he has done is an offence under the electricity acts. We have found that there was a transporter or a truck driver who was driving a tipper truck and deliberately packed on the site,” said Chitosi.
Chitosi said,” after that he was moving out of the project site and then he did not lower down the body of the tipper so when he was driving out he pulled down our lines and six electricity polls in area 43 which resulted into a lack of power in that area”.
Meanwhile the vice chairperson for HRDC Gift Trapence insist that it was not an accident but a plan.
“As I said the police should give us the report in terms of why did the driver pull down the Electricity polls because he was not even explain why he was pulling these polls surrounding my house.
Meanwhile police spokesperson James Kadadzera said he needed more time before commenting on the matter.
