Government has trashed assertions made by Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) describing the religious grouping move as a sign of bias and partisan saying it is ignoring atrocities committed by Anti-Ansah protesters.

Few days ago CCJP issued a press statement condemning government for failing to discipline Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) cadets and address the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) leadership saga.

In a press state issued by the minister of Information Mark Botomani said CCJP does not have powers to interfere with operations of the Malawi Human Rights Commission saying it is an independent body.

Botomani continued that an activity to carry out investigations on the alleged human rights violation to post-election demonstrators by security agents and DPP cadets lies in the hands of the commission responsible for Human Rights.

Botomani added that CCJP sentiments were, misleading and that it is not in a position o take into account what government has to do in resolving issues of violence and crime that are happening in the country.

“CCJP should also appreciate that its presentation of issues in its statement is misleading and does not take into account efforts employed by Government in trying to resolve issues of violence and crime,” reads part of the statement.

Government has however asked CCJP to “feel free to engage relevant Government institutions and ask for relevant information so that statements such as the one they have issued should be reflective of reality on the ground”
