Reports reaching Faceofmalawi are showing that at least two police officers have been confirmed dead in line of duty.
According to National police spokesperson James Kadadzera, the two policemen whose identity is not revealed are the victims of continuous protests that have been happening aftermath of the May 21 polls.
Kadadzera said the first case happened on August 6 2019 and the deceased died on Tuesday while receiving treatment at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) while the second incident happened today at Nsundwe Trading Centre where angry demonstrators pounced on a police officer who was discharging his duties.
Kadadzera added that the Minister of Homeland Security Nicholas Dausi is likely to issue a statement on the developments in Parliament this afternoon.
He said details for both cases will be provided after a postmortem at KCH and the minister’s statement in Parliament.
Aftermath of May 21 election there have running battles in the country between the police and people who are living in denial of the poll results as most of the people are claiming that the elections were not free, fair and credible concluding that the said winner was favored by the electoral body.
Led by Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) Malawians have been taking into the streets protesting against Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Jane Ansah to step down, labeling her as the architect of the woes the country is currently in.
Meanwhile, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Lazarus Chakwera and his counterpart United Transformation Movement (UTM) Leader Saulos Chilima are seeking nullification of the presidential poll results arguing the outcome of the elections were filled with anomalies which include the use of correctional fluid Tipp-Ex.
The electoral body declared Peter Mutharika a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate winner of the disputed elections.
