Information reaching Faceofmalawi indicates that the government of Malawi through ministry of Transport and Public Works has hiked salaries of striking truck drivers effective today.
The truck drivers started a sit-in on Monday demanding a pay salary hike of not less than MK200,000 with aim of being at par with truck drivers in the SADC region who are on salary range of Mk300,000 to Mk500,000.
The truck drivers complained that they are less paid in the SADC region with the lowest paid receiving MK25, 000 monthly.
The strike by truck drivers forced Minister of Transport and Public works Ralph Jooma to call for a meeting with Truck drivers associations to find lasting solution on the matter.
The discussion centred on the minimum wage and the two sides agreed to raise the salaries from Mk25, 000 for those ferrying dry cargo to MK60, 000.
The minimum wage for drivers of fuel tankers has been set at K140,000.
Meanwhile the truck drivers have called off the strike.
