Some Open Distance and e-Learning (ODeL) students at Mzuzu University have threatened to drag the institution to court for what they describe as failure by their management to run the ODeL programme appropriately.
The group, calling themselves Mzuzu University ODeL Taskforce, led by its chairperson Thom Phiri and Dustan Chunda who are Level Five students at the facility, accused Mzuni management of delaying to release their examination results.
At a press briefing in Mzuzu Thursday, where they also issued a statement, the students said they are asked to proceed to the other semesters without knowing results of their previous exams.
“What is more recent is about the examinations that we sat in February 2019 whose results have not been released to date. We are talking of eight months down the line. Despite this development, the University went on to administer another exam and register students for another semester in August.
“It is unfortunate that it is only at Mzuni where ODeL students proceed to up to three semesters without knowing results of the previous semesters,” Phiri said.
Meanwhile, ODeL facilitators at the university have gone on strike from October 18 to an unspecified date as a result of failure by management to pay them.
When contacted, ODeL Director at the institution Patricia Nothale referred the matter to the university registrar James Kwilimbe.
Kwilimbe could not be brought to comment on the matter when we presented the matter to him Thursday.
There are atleast 3,600 ODeL students at the Mzuni.
