At least three people are remaining in police custody in Mangochi district following acts of violence and vandalism allegedly involving the Muslim community.

Initially, the police arrested 15 people on Friday, but 12 of them have been released on bail.

On the day, Mangochi town was rocked by an afternoon of mayhem as suspected Muslims destroyed liquor shops, to allegedly ban the sale of beer in the district.

Vehicles of people found drinking at the liquor shops were also damaged in the process.

The Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) is expected to issue a statement on the matter.
