US – A dog has joined the pantheon of heroic canines that have been instrumental in the war against global terrorism.

US President Donald Trump shared on Twitter the photo of the dog that courageously ran after the Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi as he made for a dead-end tunnel where he intended to hide.

“We have declassified a picture of the wonderful dog (name not declassified) that did such a GREAT JOB in capturing and killing the Leader of ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi!” read Trump’s tweet.

Even though the photo of the canine hero was released, the name was withheld.

The name has been deliberately withheld to protect its identity as it is still in service.

“We’re not releasing the name of the dog right now … the dog is still in theatre, ” Gen Mark Milley, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, told members of the press.

President Trump waxed lyrical about the dog, deploying adjectives such as beautiful and talented to describe it.

The brave dog, according to an article on the Washington Post news portal, is said to be a Belgian Malinois.

In the course of the operation, it sustained what the US president described as minor injuries.

Dogs have long been used by the US military in special operations due to their courage and agility.
