Citizens for Progressive Action (CPA) have embarked on a one day vigil at the Indian High Commission offices in Lilongwe protesting against the construction of a Mahatma Gandhi statue anywhere in Malawi.
The development comes barely a year after successfully blocking the construction of Mahatma Gandhi statue near Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in the commercial capital Blantyre.
The grouping claim that Gandhi was a racist and having a statue of him will be an insult to the pysche of Malawi.
Writing on his official facebook page, Pemphero Mphande said: “Say no Gandhi Statue in Malawi! Vigils underway outside the Indian embassy in Lilongwe👊🇲🇼So no to selling Malawi!”.
According to the letter seen by Faceofmalawi reporter, the vigil will run for day from 10am to 5pm.
Earlier last year the grouping successfully obtained an Injunction restraining the construction of Mahatma Gandhi statue in Blantyre.
The site was being guard by the police but they no longer guard the place.
The place look deserted at the moment.
