Lawyer for President Peter Mutharika, Samuel Tembenu has prayed to court to throw away petitions by Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Leader Lazarus Chakwera and United Transformation Movement (UTM) President Saulos Chilima to nullify May 21 presidential elections results.

Tembenu made the pray to the five-member panel of judges at the Constitutional Court hearing the case in Lilongwe.

According to Tembenu, the results of the polls reflected the wishes of the people who voted on May 21, 2019.

Chakwera and Chilima are challenging the legality of Mutharika’s presidency hence seeking for nullification of the results.

On May 27, Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) declared Peter Mutharika, a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate winner of the disputed elections.

The polls case is expected to end on December 6 according to Judge Healey Potani who is chairing the panel of judges hearing the case.
