Mining in Dowa has been suspended following increased illegal activities that were taking place in the district.

Reports indicate that the Ministry of Natural Resources Energy and Mining awarded licenses to some foreign nationals who were mining precious stones in the district.

The issue came to light after Member of Parliament for Dowa East Richard Chimwendo-Banda revealed that mining activities were happening in Traditional Authority Chiwere on a large scale.

Foreign companies, among them Graphite Africa, were reportedly buying the precious stones at K200 per kilogram.
