Malawi Defence Force (MDF) has come out of the cocoon to speak on recent torching Malawi soldiers’ camp under the United Nations peacekeepers in Beni, DRC by locals after a deadly attack on Monday.
Protesters stormed UN facilities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) town of Beni on Monday, angered by the failure to stop an armed group that killed eight civilians.
Dozens of people broke into the UN headquarters in the city despite gunshots fired by Congolese security forces seeking to disperse the angry crowd.
During the protest, locals invaded Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Soldiers camp and torched it completely raising fears among Malawians.
Speaking in an interview with the press, MDF Spokesperson Major Paul Chiphwanya said no MDF soldier with the United Nations peacekeepers in Beni, DRC, was injured when a UN base in the area was overun and burnt by civilians.
Chiphwanya said MDF is doing everything possible to protest its troop from any attack in DRC.
Thousands have fled Beni in raids attributed to ADF fighters. More than 60 people have been killed in the region since the Congolese army started a campaign against the armed group last month, according to officials.
