Government says it has budgeted about K38 billion for the purchase of maize to be distributed to families that have been hit by hunger in the country.

The development comes as estimates indicate that over 1 million families are at risk of facing hunger in the country.

Speaking to MIJ Online during the official launch of the Maize distribution exercise in Dowa district on Wednesday, Vice President Everton Chimulirenji, said it is the wish of the government to ensure that every household has enough food in the country.

Chimulirenji added that out the budgeted amount, government has already started distributing over 8 thousand metric tones of the staple food to the affected families.

He revealed that at the moment, development partners have already supported government with K7 billion out of the already budgeted amount.

Chimulirenji told the media that the distribution exercise will be done up to March next year.

Meanwhile, the Department of Disaster and Management Affairs (DODMA) has said it is still working on the Malawi Vulnerability assessment report to ensure that every
household gets enough maize from the exercise.
