The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) is trashing accusations made by President Peter Mutharika that the anti-Jane Ansah protests have created an atmosphere of lawlessness.
The HRDC launched a series of protests to force the Malawi Electoral Commission chairperson Jane Ansah to resign for allegedly failing to manage the May 21 elections.
In most instances the protests turned violent, leading to the destruction of public and private property worth millions of kwacha.
Lives have been lost and some people are left with life time injuries due to violent acts.
Speaking on Wednesday during the launch of this year’s tree planting season, President Mutharika declared that those involved will one day be answerable.
But HRDC vice Chairperson Gift Trapence defends the protests, saying they have been organized following the law.
