Smiles on the faces of families that recently received maize from the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA) have been shortened after they discovered that the grains they were given are rotten.
DODMA has been distribution various relief items to families in the district as a response to the alarming situation.
The communities that benefitted from the exercise have moved to return the maize to district agriculture officers accusing them of fooling them.
This morning, MIJ Online paid a visit to Kabwabwa Village in the area of Traditional authority Msakambewa where it discovered that the maize is rotten and discolored.
In an interview with MIJ Online, Village Headman Kabwabwa and one of the beneficiaries expressed their discontent and said the people could only react by returning the maize describing the development as a mockery.
The Group Village head said his people started returning the maize on Sunday.
Others have been returning the maize today at Nachisaka Planning and Extension and Planning Area EPA in a bid to show their anger.
DODMA has since said that the department is investigating how the rotten maize got its way to the distribution point.
DODMA Publicist, Chipiliro Khamula has since said in an interview with MIJ Online that government will be sending truckloads of maize to the people ‘soon’.
