Information reaching faceofmalawi indicates that the Immigration Department has hiked the fee for an ordinary passport from Mk48, 000 to Mk90 ,000.
The hike comes barely days after the Immigration suspended application of passports.
One of top official at the Immigration Department has confirmed of the hike in an interview with the press, saying the hike is with immediate effect.
According to information at hand, express passport has been hiked from Mk68,000 to over Mk180,000.
Passport replacement has been hiked to Mk150,000 from the previous price while passport renewal is now at Mk90,000.
Diplomatic passport is now pegged at Mk200,000.
But commenting on new passport fee, Consumer Right Activists John Kapito expressed disappointment over the hike.
Kapito said the hike will affect Malawians wishing to travel outside the country.
