Police in Uganda are investigating a case in which a footballer belonging to Good News soccer club was on Wednesday stabbed to death.

Edirisa Basalirwa was jogging on Wednesday when unidentified people kidnapped and took him to a nearby church garden where he is believed to have been stabbed twice in the stomach.

One of the eyewitnesses who spoke on condition of anonymity said Basalirwa who bled profusely was rushed to Jinja regional referral hospital emergency unit where he breathed his last.

“I was transporting a passenger in the morning when I saw some young men carrying the man to the church garden. He attempted to scream but I was too scared to intervene,” he said.

Mr Musa Kyobe, another resident said that the church garden has become a spot for criminals.

He urged police to increase foot patrols in the area.

“The garden has turned out to be a corner where most unemployed youth waylay passers-by and grab their valuables. If security doesn’t do something about it, more of these cases shall be registered in this stretch,” he said.

Kiira region police spokesperson, Diana Nandawula said on Wednesday that Basalirwa was rushed to the hospital where he died three hours after admission.
