Six people have spent a night in police cell in Mzuzu for allegedly taking part in looting of shops after the demonstrations organized by Human Right Defenders Coalition (HRDC).

HRDC led by Timothy Mtambo on Thursday organized national wide protest with among other things to push for the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) to arrest for people implicated in an attempt to bribe Judges handling the Presidential polls case.

But in Mzuzu after the demonstrations, some protesters vented their anger on shops and went away with assorted items.

In an attempt to control the situation, police fired teargas but due to rainfall the teargas had little impact as protesters were seen damaging shops.
The law enforcers managed to arrest six suspects.

Northern region police public relations officer Peter Kalaya confirmed of the arrest in an interview with the press.

According to Kalaya, the suspects were found with items stolen from Farmers World and tried to break Sana shops at Luwinga in the city.

The suspects will appear in court soon.
