Old Mutual Malawi Limited reintroduced the Mathematics Olympiad six year ago. The objective behind this initiative was to encourage secondary school students to excel in Mathematics and also bust the myth that this is a difficult subject. In 2019/2020. 139 schools registered for the Mathematics Olympiad.
Old Mutual (Malawi) Limited believes in nurturing future leaders by discovering, encouraging and challenging mathematically gifted young people in Malawi to participate in the annual Old Mutual Mathematics Olympiad. This directly encourages secondary school students to develop a passion for mathematics as a catalyst to many disciplines key to developing the nation. The competition is also assisting in encouraging networking among mathematics teachers in secondary schools. Old Mutual (Malawi) Limited invested sixteen million five hundred thousand kwacha for the 2019/2020 Old Mutual Mathematics Olympiad competition under the theme “inspired”.
The Old Mutual Mathematics Olympiad continues to excites and encourage the participating students in the country. Last year, top three winners participated in the Pan-African Mathematics Olympiad in Cape Town, in the Republic of South Africa, where Malawian learners had the opportunity to compete with other mathematicians from across Africa where they managed to scoop a bronze medal.
Dedza Secondary School’s Jones Chinguwo emerged the best student in recent competition and his school Dedza Secondary School got the best school award. Abdul-Rahman Hussein of Nkhatabay Secondary School and Chisomo Nanthowa of Robert Blake Secondary School scooped the second and third position respectively; Nkhatabay Secondary School and Robert Blake Secondary School took second and third position respectively in the schools competition.
Since the inception, the Old Mutual Mathematics Olympiad sponsorship continues to provide a platform for many participants to discover their passion for mathematics and motivate them to pursue various career paths. The sponsorship hosts a cohort of prominent personalities and role models including Dr Mathews Mtumbuka, the CEO, Ubuntu Network and Mrs. Edith Jiya, The Group CEO On Old Mutual (Malawi) Limited who appreciates and acknowledges the positive impact their experience with the Old Mutual Olympiad has on their career.
