The Lilongwe Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday sentenced Sherry Rafik, 23, to pay K800,000 fine for causing deaths of two people by reckless driving.

State Prosecutor Inspector Isaac Banda told the court that the convict on 17 January this year at Mpingu along Lilongwe-Mchinji road killed a fellow driver, Nelson Kalema, and his passenger, Fanizo Nalimo, in a head-on collision.

Rafiki was driving a Madza Demio, registration number BV 1551 when he hit a 7 tonner lorry ( NB 8866) which swerved to the right and collided head-on with a Nissan Note ( MN 4975) driven by Kalema, who died alongside his passenger.

Senior Resident Magistrate Shyleen Yona sentenced Rafiki to pay
K800,000 fine of which K200,000 will be shared among the bereaved families.

Rafiki comes from Mawero village, Traditional Authority M’bwatalika in Lilongwe.
