Scores of people from Senior Chief Ngabu’s area in Chikwawa District are marching to the District Commissioner’s offices to present a petition, calling for the re-installation of Senior Chief Ngabu who was fired by President Peter Mutharika in December last year.

Mutharika fired Noah Dalasi Chisafali Ngabu as Senior Chief Ngabu of Chikwawa District due to what the Malawi leader called misconduct towards his subjects.

I, Arthur Peter Mutharika, President of the Republic of Malawi, pursuant to powers vested in me by chapter 22:03, part 1, section 11(b) and 9(c) of the chiefs Act, do hereby remove you Noah Dalasi Chisafali Ngabu from exercising the functions of Senior Chief Ngabu of Chikwawa District.

“[This is] with immediate effect due to recommendations arising from the commission of inquiry conducted in August 2019 into your alleged misconduct towards your subjects under your jurisdiction,” the letter read in part.

On Tuesday morning, sympathizers of the fired Chief took to the street to express anger over the decision.

The protesters carried placards with messages against the move and some were chanting anti-Mutharika’s decision songs.
