The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has declared Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Peter Dimba as a winner for Lilongwe South Constituency in the by-elections took place yesterday.
MEC Chairperson Justice Jane Ansah made the declaration in Blantyre this morning.
Dimba faced four other contenders two independents,Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate and another for Mbakuwaku Movement for Development (MMD) in yesterdays’ by-elections.
Announcing the results in Blantyre on Friday, Ansah said Dimba got 11,230 votes, Frank Mazizi of DPP got 1,663 votes while Patson Kachingwe (Independent) got 1800 votes.
Samson Phinifolo (Independent) got 295 votes and Julius Chombwe (MMD) had 50 votes.
The election had 32,459 registered voters and 15,207 turned out to vote.
The by-elections were postponed last year due to reported cases of violence during the campaign period after Mazizi complained to MEC over violence in the area.
